Different Types of Towing Vehicles

Truck Use During Roadside Assistance

Cars break down when you least expect it and leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere. It is in such cases that you would need the help of a professional and reputable roadside assistance company. Here are the different types of vehicles used by towing services.

#1: Flatbed Tow Trucks

Flatbed tow trucks have a long empty bed that moves upwards and downwards with the aid of hydraulics. They are among the most common towing vehicles in the industry because they are easy to use. People can simply drive their cars up the ramp or have it pulled up. Apart from hauling cars, flatbed trucks are also used for the towing of boats. They are considered to be safe, which is why they are favored by countless roadside assistance companies.

#2: Hook and Chain Tow Trucks

This is arguably the oldest type of tow truck in the world. It uses a chain wrapped around the damaged vehicle’s bumper or axle, which is then attached to a hook so that the wrecker can pull the car from one place to another. Very few roadside assistance companies still use this type of truck because it often causes damage to the bumper or axle, as well as tarnishes the towed vehicle’s paint job. Also, they aren’t suitable for the transportation of 4×4 automobiles as they can cause irreparable damage to the drivetrain.

#3: Wheel-Lift Tow Truck

Perhaps the cheapest type of wrecker on the market. They are similar to the above-mentioned tow truck as they use a hook, which is attached under the rear or front wheels of a car. Then the automobile is lifted via a pneumatic hoist so it can be hauled away. They are not as safe as their flatbed counterparts but still get the job done with relatively few complications.

#4: Integrated Tow Truck

Any towing company would use this type of wrecker for heavy-duty purposes. They are specialized vehicles that have the capacity to lift and transport anything from compact cars to buses to rigs, and anything in between.
